ZELLENWERK harnesses the light energy of a video image to drive singing bowls. The video features politicians, war games and simulations, scenes of war, and (Bundeswehr) advertisements. The light emitted by the monitor generates an electrical voltage within Grätzel cells (dye-sensitized solar cells); this voltage is amplified and ultimately utilized as a control voltage for solenoids that strike the singing bowls. The result is an acoustic cacophony composed of the sound of the bowls, the clicking of the solenoids as they engage, and the audio track of the video.
